Hey guys! Just thought I would share this great Hobart getaway we had over the Melbourne Cup long weekend. To be honest, neither of us had any interest to travel around Australia before, but this has now opened up a can of worms! What a gorgeous place
full of charm and character. I thought I would share our experiences and list of must do’s including landmarks, restaurants and other interesting things. I only made a short snippet video this time, unfortunately not as crazy as my other travel videos 🙂
Landmarks –Â
Mona – This is the ever so popular and controversial museum of Modern and New Art. It’s actually one of the main reasons that drew me to having this Hobart getaway in the first place. It’s not your normal type of museum so be prepared to be shocked and intrigued! 🙂
Port Arthur – What a fascinating and equally eerie experience. This is definitely worth the hour and a half drive out of the city. We hired a car and it made life so much easier. This drive to Port Arthur itself is just breathtaking!
Mount Wellington – This was a highlight for me. Again, the drive up (about 30 mins) was gorgeous! Being up 4,163 ft, you can only imagine how stunning the view was. We sat up at the top for ages just gazing out into the distance.
Salamanca Markets – Salamanca Place itself is the place to be in Hobart. Here you can enjoy many bars, restaurants and cafes. The market itself is amazing and runs on a Saturday from 8am – 3pm. It holds around 300 stalls and ranges from fresh and gourmet produce, arts, crafts and handiwork from all over Tasmania, interstate and overseas. This is a must do and one of the main attractions in Hobart.
Restaurants/Cafes –
Rockwall – A sophisticated steakhouse with an upmarket ambience situated in Salamanca Place.
The Drunken Admiral – Hobart is known for it’s fresh seafood given it’s location and this place on the waterfront didn’t disappoint. This was the best seafood platter I’ve ever had and trust me I’m picky when its comes to seafood.
Smolt – This was a funky restaurant with a relaxing view of Salamanca Square.
Daci & Daci – This uber cool cafe was reminiscent of a New York eatery, a perfect sanctuary for brunch, dessert or a just a casual coffee.
Da Angelos – We had the best Veal Scaloppine and Lasagna that rivalled anything we had in Italy. It was a 9pm on a Monday and so busy that we had to share a table on bar stools with another couple! Definitely, worth booking in advance. (voted #1 on Trip Advisor)
Jackman & McRoss – The perfect bakery for breakfast or brunch with amazing coffee and sweets.
To sum it all up, I would highly recommend having a short Hobart getaway. If you’re a seafood lover, you will enjoy and appreciate the freshness of the seafood against a scenic waterfront. It has a peaceful serenity with plenty to see and do. The word picturesque doesn’t even do this place justice.
